rats & mice

Just one pair of rats are potentially capable of producing 2,000 descendants, if left unchecked. Each breeding pair will also shed more than a million body hairs every year and can leave 50,000 droppings, contributing to additional infestations of parasites like fleas, lice and ticks.
Rats and mice are known to spread disease, particularly in kitchens or food storage areas, but their constant gnawing instinct can also cause significant damage to property, furnishings and equipment. . . especially electrical and data cables!
Because both rats and mice are largely nocturnal, they can remain hidden for a long time before you even begin to suspect a problem.
EARLY SIGNS OF A RODENT INFESTATION:Here are some common signs of rat or mouse activity you can look for in your property:
Sound Scratching noises, especially at night, is often the first signs of activity.
Smell Rats and mice urinate frequently and their urine has a pungent, ammonia like, smell. . . which can linger for a long time (even after an infestation has been removed).
Damage Both species shred materials like loft insulation, paper, cardboard and fabrics in order to line their nests.
Droppings Rodent leave up to 100 droppings a night, small and dark (3 - 8mm in length for mice, 8 to 12mm for rats), scattered randomly and inside cupboards or on counter tops and along skirting.
Grease marks Dark smears around holes or on corners caused by their bodies brushing against walls, floors and skirting on regular routes.
Urine pillars In the case of long established or heavy infestations, body grease, combined with dirt and urine, builds up into small mounds. . . as much as 4cm high.
Tracks & footprints Dusty environments can show up rodent tracks and tail drag marks. To check for suspected activity, sprinkle flour, talc or china clay and look for fresh tracks the next day.
Live or dead pests Spotting a mouse or rat during the daytime can be an indication of a heavy infestation.

grey squirrels
tap to call: 07533 915 640
The grey squirrel is a rodent, and problems occur when squirrels have gained access to roof spaces, where the noise they make can become a real nuisance. They will also breed in roof spaces where they build their nests from loft insulation or other available materials.
Grey squirrels are less active during periods of cold weather, but do not hibernate.
Once established in an attic or loft, squirrels can cause immense damage to electrical wiring, insulation, plastic water pipes or other materials with their gnawing. . . sometimes resulting in fires or floods, so call ARD at the first sign of a problem.
treatment options
Whilst poison baiting is the most cost effective treatment for rats or mice, it is unlawful to use chemical control on squirrels because of the risk to non-target species. Instead, grey squirrels are trapped and removed, to be humanely dispatched off-site. It is also important to remove potential sources of food and identify any access points, then proof these against further ingress to the property once the univited guests have been removed.
Based on a combination of trapping, baiting, or both, as a rule of thumb most domestic treatments would normally require two visits, two or three days apart in order to replace bait and/or remove dead pests.
pet safety
Although baited traps are always located in places that are inaccessible to pets and children, if you are at all concerned about the safety of a chosen treatment, tap to call Dave Atkinson on 07533 915 640 for a friendly and informed chat.
