wasp nests

During the summer months, we are inundated with phone calls about wasps.  ARD specialise in treating wasp infestation and removing wasp nests anywhere on your property using specialist chemicals and applicators for those hard to reach places.

Warning!  Disturbing a wasp or hornets' nest yourself can be very dangerous!  Both species release an airborne pheromone when threatened. . .  causing all others in the vicinity to become instantly aggressive in defence of their nest and young.

To reduce the risk to you and your family, arrange for a professional ARD wasp nest treatment and removal.  Our effective solutions will eliminate wasps or hornets, keeping you safe from the threat of stings.  Wasp stings are more painful than deadly, but in rare cases, people have been known to suffer from life threatening anaphylactic shock.

MORE INFO ABOUT WASPS & HORNETS:

There are many different wasp species but the ones encountered most in the UK are 'yellow jackets', part of the Vespidae family, which are to be found living in nests with a queen and non-reproducing workers.  Unlike bees, who live off their honey, a wasp colony dies off in the winter. . .  with the exception of the queen.

When wasp queens emerge in the spring, they are able to self-fertilise eggs with stored sperm in order to produce a new colony.

Wasp's nests are constructed from plant fibre or wood pulp and cemented in place using their own secretions.  Varying in size from a small football, up to that of a basketball. . .  although these are very rare as most people tend to have wasp nests treated before they get to that size.

Although wasps feed on nectar, they do ocassionally attack bee hives to feed off the honey inside.  Later in the year, when semi rotten fruit is available, wasps & hornets become more aggressive, effectively drunk, and are more likely to sting you.

Although there are wasp killing products available over the counter, you'll need to get close to the nest to treat it, increasing the likelihood of stings. We would always recommend the services of a professional pest controller using the correct protection and industrial strength products to treat your problem.

Hornets.  Generally a lot larger than wasps, sometimes measuring in excess of 2 inches!

Because of the higher levels of toxins hornets are able to deliver with each sting, these are more painful than wasps, although rarely fatal unless given to allergic victims.

Like wasps, queen hornets are able to store sperm within them until they are ready to fertilise eggs.  When they have made a nest, the first hatch are generally responsible for maintaining and enlarging the nest, foraging for food and care of the larvae.  Again, like wasps, only fertilised queens are able to over winter.

nest removal

tap to call:  07533 915 640

The same wasp nest is never re-occupied the following year but, for your peace of mind (especially if you intend selling the property!), ARD can return to remove the dead nest after the treatment has had time to completely eradicate the whole colony.  Please note that this additional service is chargeable, see below under 'follow-up treatments' *.

* The eradication of wasps is extremely effective and the need for further visits is very rare. . .  so should a treatment fail, we will return promptly to re-administer free of charge!

bee nests & swarms

Being under threat and critically important to agriculture, all bee species are protected by law and can only be destroyed if they, or their nest, pose a risk to the public or property.

Bees face many challenges for survival during their short existence, so ARD always endeavour to preserve them, whenever possible.

BEES. . .  TO RELOCATE OR ERADICATE?

Are the bees a danger to you or your family?  Does any family member react violently to bee stings?  Is the swarm's nest close to a fire source or chimney?

Finally, is the nest easily accessible?  If so, it may be possible for a local beekeeping expert to relocate the swarm, and its queen.

If relocation is not practical, or the nest has to be eradicated for safety reasons, then all entry points will need to be sealed once activity stops to prevent non-target bees from entering the treated colony, robbing the honey and thereby endangering their own lives.
